Annual Fish Fry a Success

The annual fish fry was held August 28, 2005 at the Schuyler Annex.  A delicious menu of fish, chicken nuggets, macaroni & cheese, fresh corn and green beans, coleslaw, fresh tomatoes and cucumbers and dessert awaited the 178 people who attended.

A big THANK YOU to Bill and Kathy Kraus for providing the fish and fresh veggies and for cooking the fish for us.  Thank you to Ray Kraus, Kim Friedli and Mike Barlow for their fish donations as well.

And as always, THANK YOU to all of our great volunteers, as we couldn’t do it without YOU.

Volunteers who helped were June Workman, Judy Thompson, Heidi Stromgren, Dean and Carolyn Strohm, Carol and Dale Stout, Marion Smith, Betty Smith, John and Karen Pickett, Phyllis Michaels, Kathlene Michael, Stephen Koger, Linda Fagan and Sylvia Calkins.

A special Thank You also to Kathy Kessinger.

Virginia Hollar

Robert Rickel

Grant Application

The Kansas Museums Association each year awards grants to selected members for various projects.  We have applied for a grant to cover the cost of much-needed archive shelving.  The amount of shelving we currently have is not adequate for our needs.  The KMA will award the grants in October.  While the amount of the grant is variable depending on the project and other factors, grants can be awarded up to $400.

Alley Repairs

A new culvert has been laid to alleviate the drainage problem at the alley.  Tim Love dug the trench and laid the culvert.  Tim also poured a new concrete sidewalk across the culvert and put a flange under it.

Thanks to the City of Burlingame and Tim Love for helping us with this project.

Cookbook Contest

Remember our 150th anniversary cookbook from last year?  It has been submitted into a cookbook contest sponsored by the Tabasco Company.  Copies were sent for the entry and by the end of the year we will be notified when we win.  The top prize is $2,500.

Schuyler Museum is Recognized in Feature Story

The September 15, 2005 edition of The Osage County Herald contained a nice feature story about the Schuyler Museum.  Special attention was given to the recently completed military display, even showing photographs.  Of course, other parts of the museum were also given notice.  It was a pleasant surprise to see this story appear.  We always like positive attention!

World War II Article

On the Internet

Jim Nelson, a BHPS member and board member, has just published an article on the Internet.  The article is about the causes of the WWII Bataan Death March where approximately 20,000 American and Philippine troops died as POW's of the Japanese in April of 1942.  The article contains a great deal of new information on the causes of the atrocities from Japanese sources that has never before been published in the United States and it may be of interest to historians, veterans and those interested in military history.  Look for Jim Nelson under ESSAYS at:  http:// ww.us-japandialogueonpows.org.

Upcoming Events

The museum will again this year be hosting the Festival of Trees at the museum.  This is a popular part of the Country Christmas celebration that will be held on December 3rd this year.  The annual Christmas home tour is also being planned.  New this year will be our booth at the Country Christmas craft show.  Stop by our booth at the annex and see our special Christmas gift ideas.
