Volume 2, Issue 3, September 30, 2006
The annual
fish fry fundraising event held August 27 at the annex was again a big
success! The threat of rain didn’t seem
to dampen anyone’s appetite.
It is through the kindness and hard work
of many volunteers we were able to serve nearly 200 children and adults. Those attending enjoyed approximately 150
pounds of fish. The amount of food
prepared was just right for the number of guests who attended.
Our most
sincere thanks to the following who helped by catching fish, setting up for the
event, making dessert, cooking or providing food or working at the event: Mike Barlow, Helen Briggs, Sylvia Calkins,
Christi, Allison and Chance Droege, Linda Fagan, Jean Granger, Andy Harris,
Shirley Hayden, Doug Jones, Bill & Kathy Kraus, Brian Kraus, Ray Kraus, Don
& Carol Kurtz, Glen Masters, Connie Meyer, Kathy Michael, Phyllis Michaels,
Nancy Nelson, June Newton, Karen Pickett, Barb Quaney, Laura Mae Reves, Delores
Rieck, Chelle Rollins, Jane Roth, Shirley Seastrom, Buck Short, Evelyn Smith,
Larry & Kathy Smith, Brianna Strohm, Caleb Strohm, Dean & Carolyn
Strohm, Trey Strohm, Heidi Stromgren, Scott & Stephanie Teeselink, Judy Thompson, Josh & Amanda Welch,
Georgia Wideau, and June Workman.

Annual Meeting
The annual meeting of the Burlingame Historical
Preservation Society will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2006, in the
research room of the museum at 7:00 p.m.
More information and the ballot for the election of board members will
be included further in the newsletter.
Upcoming Events
Burlingame’s Country Christmas celebration
will be on December 2nd this year.
BHPS will again sponsor the Christmas home tour, which will include four
nearby homes.
The museum will host the Festival of Trees
for those who would like to come in and decorate a tree. Each year the trees are differently decorated
and always unique. The number of trees
available is limited. We suggest you
call 654-3170 and leave your number or 654-3561 to reserve your tree
early. Plan to stop by and vote for your
favorite tree too.
Old St. Nick will be on hand for pictures
with those wishing a picture with Santa.
This will be held at the ballroom at the hotel downtown.
It should be a day full of activities with
the Parade of Lights to be held 6 p.m.
The Burlingame Community Fund has a
beautiful queen size quilt in the Chrysanthemum pattern, made by Kathy Quaney
Smith that will be given away at this celebration also. The quilt is done in shades of greens, creams
and rust. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for
$5 and may be purchased at the Schuyler Museum or First State Bank.
Museum “This and That”
On
September 26 we were happy to have as visitors to the museum twenty-seven
students and three adults from the local third grade classes. Mr. Burkdoll and Mr. Marsh brought their
classes for a visit. We are always happy
to see the teachers bring their class to visit.
Earlier in September we had a visit from a
group of “red hat ladies”.
We received a call one afternoon from a
couple from Osage County, Missouri who were touring along the Santa Fe
Trail. They found our museum in the
tourism book and wished to tour the museum.
Within a couple of days, another call was
received from some ladies with their own special interest in Burlingame. It seems their surname was Burlingame, and
they were related to Anson Burlingame, for whom the town was named. They spent considerable time at the museum
and enjoyed learning about our history and our museum.
Ironically, just the day before an inquiry
had been answered by email from a man writing a book about Anson
Burlingame. The man is 83 years old in
Michigan was another distant relative to Mr. Burlingame.
In the past we had an inquiry from a man
in Montana doing research for a book on Caroline Lockhart. He eventually even came to Burlingame for a
visit so he could get the “feel” of where she grew up and visited the museum.
It is always exciting for us to have
inquiries or visitors of former residents or their descendents whom we have
read about in the histories of Burlingame and Osage County. A few of the names we have had contact with
are Burlingame, Sheldon, Drew, Hoover, Polley, Rastall and Rulison.
Chiefs Tickets
Three Kansas City Chiefs tickets have
been donated for a drawing to be held Dec. 2nd for the game with
Jacksonville Jaguars on December 31, 2006.
Game time is yet to be announced.
Entries are available at the Schuyler Museum, Kraus Hardware, the Great
Plains Quilt Co. or any board member and are sale now through December 2nd. Entries are $5 each or 3 for $10.00. The drawing will be held before the parade at
the Christmas tree on main street in Burlingame.
Honoring Our Veterans Memorial
We’d like to remind those who have not yet submitted
information for the Honoring Our Veterans memorial to do so.
The military information sheet is
available at the following locations:
Schuyler Museum, Santa Fe Cafe, Kraus Hardware and Great Plains Quilt
Co. in Burlingame; Lyndon Library and Osage County Historical Society in
Lyndon; Whistle Stop Cafe and American Legion Post 317 in Melvern; Osage City
Library, Senior Citizens Center and Army Reserve Center in Osage City; Kansas
State Bank and V.F.W. Post 2709 in Scranton.
We hope you will take a few minutes to complete a military information sheet for yourself and/or any member of your family who is a veteran and submit it along with a photograph of the veteran. This is an important part of history that needs to be locally available for our future generations.
Valentine’s Day Gourmet Dinner
Scott and Stephanie Teeselink would like
to host a gourmet dinner to benefit the museum.
Scott and Stephanie will cook and serve
the dinner at their lovely country log home north of Burlingame for Valentine’s
Day, though the exact date of the dinner is negotiable.
The winner of the drawing will receive
dinner for six people. Only 100 tickets
are available for this drawing in order to increase the odds of winning. Each ticket will cost $20.
Tickets for this drawing may be purchased
from now until January 31, 2007 at which time the drawing will be held. Tickets may be purchased at the Schuyler
Museum, Kraus Hardware, Great Plains Quilt Co. or from any board member.
